How Do I Know If I Need Therapy?
By Lauren Spinella
Wondering if therapy could be right for you? You're not alone.
So many people contemplate therapy for a long time before starting. And you want to know what? One of the most common things I hear from people once they do start it:
"I wish I started sooner."
Here are some ways to know if therapy could help you:
Things Feel Harder to Do Than They Used To
Maybe you used to drive with ease, but now suddenly have more anxiety when you get in the car.
Maybe you used to love group gatherings but lately they've been feeling draining.
It's harder to get up and get moving in the morning.
Work drags more than it used to.
You're getting irritated by things that used to be easier to deal with.
One of the signs that our struggles are getting worse and will continue to get worse is when the day-to-day starts to feel more challenging. This can be a sign that a change is needed and therapy can be just the thing.
You've Tried Managing It On Your Own
You've read the self-help books, followed the mental health influencers, journaled, meditated, you name it.
And you're still not where you want to be.
While these supportive actions are great, they often don't address the core issues. Therapy is here to do just that.
You've Tried it in The Past But Didn't Jive With The Therapist
A good fit is essential for good therapeutic work. And just like with anyone else in your life, you're not going to vibe with every therapist out there--and that's okay! The biggest mistake I see so often is people giving up on therapy because of one negative experience or one therapist who just didn't give them what they needed.
The right fit can make ALL the difference.
Your Personal Struggles Are Starting to Affect Other Parts of Your Life
You're distracted at work and falling behind on some tasks.
You're losing your patience more easily with your kids.
You're cancelling plans with friends.
You're arguing with your partner.
If you notice that your anxiety or emotional challenges are starting to bleed into other areas, it might be time to make a change.
You're Sick and Tired of Being Sick and Tired
At some point, enough is enough, am I right?
You've been struggling for so long, maybe on and off, maybe ongoing, but regardless, you've been fighting an uphill battle and it's exhausting.
If you're tired of feeling the way you've been feeling and struggling the way you have, there is hope. Therapy can put you on a different path and get you off the hamster wheel of struggle.
If your struggles have started to impact your life, happiness, interests, relationships, self-esteem, energy level, mood, or motivation, therapy might be the best next step to help you feel better and get to where you want to be.
